Generate YouTube Thumbnails with AI (That Actually Look Like You)

Stop spending an hour in Canva every time you upload a video. This skill generates 5 unique thumbnail concepts, complete with AI-generated images of your face, matching titles, and the research baked in. Pick your favorites and upload. Two minutes, not two hours.

The Problem

Every YouTube video needs a thumbnail. And every time, it's the same story. You open Canva or Photoshop. You find a decent photo of yourself. You try different text, different backgrounds, different layouts. An hour later, you've got something that's... fine. Not great. Fine. Then next week, you do it all over again. The real problem isn't making one thumbnail. It's that thumbnails are a recurring task with no shortcut. You can hire a designer ($50-100 per thumbnail adds up fast), use templates (they all look the same), or spend your own time on it. And most people don't realize that thumbnail quality directly affects how many people watch your video. YouTube's algorithm uses click-through rate as a primary ranking signal. A better thumbnail literally means more views. It's not decoration. It's distribution.

How It Works

This skill turns thumbnail creation into a two-minute conversation. You tell Claude what your video is about. It interviews you about your style preferences and the emotion you want to convey. Then it generates 5 completely different thumbnail concepts. Each one pairs a unique title with a complementary thumbnail image featuring your face, all generated by AI. The research is already baked in. Best practices from top YouTube creators (Mr. Beast, Alex Hormozi, Ali Abdaal, MKBHD), color psychology, typography rules, composition principles. You don't have to study any of that. The skill already knows it. The AI generates images with your actual face using reference photos. Not stock photos, not avatars. Five photos of yourself is all it takes, and the resemblance is surprisingly good. You pick your favorites, upload to YouTube, and let YouTube's built-in A/B testing find the winner. Over time, you feed back what works and the skill gets smarter.

Technical Setup

You'll need Claude and an image generation API connected as an MCP server. The skill recommends kie for image generation, but works with alternatives too. The getting-started guide walks you through the full setup: connecting the image API, preparing your reference photos, and installing the skill. Takes about 10 minutes the first time. After that, it's just "create thumbnails for my new video" and you're off. What you get back: 5 thumbnail concepts (1280x720 PNG files), paired titles, and a concepts document with all the details. Upload your top 3 to YouTube and let the data decide.
